The Gardener’s Choice for Planting in March

It’s a common practice in the Southeastern states to prepare and plant a garden during the month of March. Here’s a reminder of the most popular flowers that can be planted in the early Spring. The flowers tend to be hearty and able to withstand fluctuations in temperature:

Primrose

Primroses come in many colors, including white, pink, yellow, purple and red. They prefer cool, moist and shaded soil. Their leaves grow close to the ground.

Petunia

Petunias are known for their bright blooms that come in many colors and patterns. They are easy to grow and do best in full sun, with six hours of direct sunlight per day.

Viola

Violas are part of the violet family. They grow best in well-drained soil and full sun or partial shade. They bloom in the cool condiations of the Spring and Fall, and also during the mid-Summer.

Alyssum

Alyssum is a fragrant flower with tiny blooms. The sweet alyssum flower can tolerate partial shade but do best with six hours of full sun.

Pansy

Pansies are known for their color variations and tolerance for cold weather. They grow well in cool to warm climates and require moist, fertile soil.
